VINTAGE HEDDON BAMBOO FLY ROD, THE BLACK BEAUTY. From the early 1950s, this is Heddon's Model 17, nine feet with 2tips for a 6 weight line.
All sections are straight and full length. Reel seat is down-locking screw with sliding ring and nut, patented by James Heddon. Half wells cork grip in very good shape. Hook keeper ring is missing; it strap is in place.
Ink on butt section reads "Heddon", "Black Beauty", and #17 9' 2 1/2 F HCH or D. Chrome stripper and steel perfection guides and tip tops. The ferrules are Japanned black nickle silver. The aluminum tube is original as is the cloth rod sleeve with Heddon tag. One wrap on the lowest mid section guide has been redone, a decent job but varnish does not match. A few nicks in the bakelite spacer. The model 17 with the 2 1/2 ferrules was considered a bass rod. Today, they are good for bigger trout streams as well, and some guys love them for wet flies. Overall, this Heddon is in very good condition, ready to fish on display.
