VERY RARE DOREMUS SUYDAM & NIXON NEW YORK Copper Button pre-1840VERY NICE

RARE - "DOREMUS SUYDAM & NIXON-NEW YORK" - Metal (Shank Eye) Button [1820's]. [Button Diameter 0.715" or 18.1mm][Thickness 0.085" or 2.2mm][Shank Eye ID 0.125" or 3.2mm] [OD 0.250" or 6.4mm]. These dimensions were taken with Starrett micrometers, and are within. 0005 of an inch in accuracy. This simple looking creature (button), is valuable and that is why my attention to its details.

The button is most probable of copper (not brass), its shank is probably brass (not copper), the shank is brazed to the button. I chose not to scratch/acid test the metal, it is far too valuable.

The complete button appears to have been gilded (gilted) at one time, evident by the gold on its back, and somewhat still on its edge and front. The buttons backmark is paramount to the value of this button. Its apparent designer was a gentleman by the name of Richard Trested, a die sinker who came from England to America in 1821.

He died in 1829 apparently from a infection in finger, probably gotten from making this die? Interestingly and equally important, this backmark appears on the quite rare and very valuable Hard Times Tokens of New York I believe, dated around 1835. Possibly the button was intended for military garments. If anyone reading this has any additional information regarding its rarity and/or its history, I would certainly love to hear about it. I've tried my best to research and provide the most complete and accurate description possible of the button, and have spent many hours in this endeavor.

I believe this button could hold as much.. If not MORE MONETARY & HISTORICAL value than its numismatic counterpart (hard times tokens), and may well be just as rare or more so than the tokens.

It has the same backmark, and today there are probably just about as many very serious button collectors, as seri ous coin/token collectors. I would be more than happy to provide any additional photos, and/or information requested that I possibly could. Thank you for reading my very long description, I hope it was found more informative than boring!
