This item is an antique vintage right-handed 34 3/4 wood shaft putter. It is a dot face blade style with a little off set to it. Made by George Nicoll in Scotland at their Leven Fife factory. Has MacDonald Smith's signature on the back along with Lakeville G C where he was the pro.MacDonald Smith was one of the famous Smith brothers originally from Carnoustie Scotland. His brothers Wille and Alex both won the U S Open. Mac Smith was an outstanding player but is known as one of the best and most famous golfers never to have won a major championship despite finishing in the top 10 in Majors 17 times. The head is in very good vintage condition.
The head is clean and not all rusted. It has very few of the expected play nicks and dings. Please look at the many zoom pictures for a better idea of condition. The shaft is an old apparently original hickory.
The shaft is straight, I see no cracks and it is tight at the hosel. The grip is an old long leather wrap that is in very good vintage condition. Great collectible with this name and in this condition. If you are considering playing with this club all wooden shafted irons should be re-set prior to play.
While I see no issues with the shaft (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These wooden shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee wooden shafts against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old wooden shafted club off a driving range mat.
Never hit an old wooden shafted wood with a hard range ball. That is the way the carriers charge.
