Very Nice Antique Japanese Style Napoleon III Lacquerware Jewelry Box, c. This is a very nice papier mâché jewelry or trinket box in black lacquer with Japonaise decoration. It is a mid-sized box, very handsomely decorated and finely detailed, depicting a lady seated in front of a lake with colorful boats on it. She is talking with a warrior or samurai. The interior retains its original blue color.
These lacquerware pieces were quite popular in the mid to late 1800's in England and France and were made in both countries. The high leads us to believe it is of French origin. The box is 7 inches wide and 5. It is in very good antique condition with some minor blemishes resulting from years of use. We would date it to the third quarter of the 19th century, in the reign of Napoleon III.
