Late 1800s Cigar-Silk Smoking Jacket With Cap Very Nice

This Jacket and cap are in very good condition for its age, well over 100 years old. It has some small age wear spots were some of the ribbons are loose but not on any seem. A Jacket like this was on Antique Road Show. This has a lot going for it. It's collectible as a man's garment, as a tobacco collectible and also as folk art because of the way it's pieced and the work on it, in the late 19th century they were made into quilts and table covers.

You just don't see a lot of clothing made out of them. So this is a really special piece with the cap you never see.

I would date this to about 1880s, 1890s. During the Victorian era, cigar smoking became a popular pastime for men. Many homes had a private drawing room where men would gather to smoke and visit. Men would don smoking jackets and smoking caps which absorbed the odor of the cigar smoke. During the late 1800s, cigar manufacturers bundled their products in batches of 25 or 50 cigars and tied the bundles with gold silk ribbons on which were printed the manufacturers names.

Women who did fancy work and quilting found a purpose for these silk ribbons and created quilts, table runners, and smoking jackets from them.
