Antique FRAGET N PLAQUE Silverplate Candlesticks, Poland, pre-1915 Very Nice

Gorgeous pair of antique silverplate candleholders made by the Joseph Fraget Co. They measure approximately 14.5" tall, with a 6" base diameter (not including the feet).

Each one weighs 1 lb. They're in very nice condition and have polished up beautifully (without much effort).

There is some slight wearing away of the silver in places (the last photo shows the most noticeable area) but overall they look great and would be a beautiful addition to any table. Some history on the pieces. About 200 years ago French brothers Alphonse and Joseph Fraget arrived in Warsaw, then part of the Russian Empire, to make silver table ware. They used an innovative method of silver deposition by soldering a thin silver sheet to the red-heated copper, known as silver plating (or silver rolling). In 1851 the company switched to a newer technology of galvanic silver deposition, which allowed for a very thin silver layer, and led to the economic consumption of precious metal and a significant decrease in price. By the end of the 19th century the galvanic method practically replaced the former rolled-silver plating technique. Fraget Mark on these candlesticks (info from the Association of Small Collectors of Antique Silver). It consists of the inscription "FRAGET PLAQUE" inside the oval. The letter "N" in the center of the oval means silver deposition onto brass surface. A second oval contains the coat of arms of the Russian Empire, the two-headed eagle. Inside a third oval is the coat of arms of the coppersmiths' and bronze-smiths' corporation. We know this pre-dates 1915 because after Poland became independent in 1915, the Russian coat of arms was no longer included.
