My specialty is levels and hand planes but I have done other items as well. I have restored hundreds of levels and planes, including for major collectors and museums. I believe in thrift and taking care of my tools and preserving those items from the past that keep us connected to the future. In my descriptions you will find stories about how these came to be and possibly why they are important. I hope you find this site entertaining as well as a source for quality items for your enjoyment.
Up for sale we have a rare Antique Stanley No. 98 Brass Bound Plumb and Level in Rosewood with Dovetailed Brass Ends and Brass Top Plate.
This was the departure from the nailed on brass bindings used until 1902 when the Stratton patent expired and Stanley changed to the dovetailed with the difference being they went through the end plates where Stratton doweled them with the end plate covering the edge binding. Stanley also used the Handy Hold on the sides of all their levels at this point. This is also when Stanley first introduced brass screws on their machinists levels as scientists began to discover the effects of corrosion from dissimilar metals. The brass screws would not show up on standard production levels until during the 1920's. 98 versions were void of any identifying marks as everyone purchasing levels knew the Stanley features and in the limited space available, seemed to detract from the appearance. Some later models have been observed with 98 on the top plate. The level is 6" L x 31/32" W x 1-9/16 Tall. Please see pictures and ask any questions.
